Cryogenics and thermo-hydraulics engineer M/F
Job Description
As part of the SupraFusion Research Program and Facilities (PEPR), we are seeking an engineer specializing in cryogenics, thermal engineering, and hydraulics to join our team dedicated to developing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets for the fusion machines of the future.
Main Responsibilities:
1) Numerical simulations and analytical calculations:
- Perform complex numerical simulations in thermal, hydraulic, and cryogenic engineering to develop new cooling concepts for HTS superconducting magnets.
- Perform analytical calculations to model and predict the behavior of cryogenic systems under various operating conditions.
2) Laboratory Activities and Operation of Test Stations
- Contribute to the integration and operation of prototype and demonstration HTS magnets in cryogenic test stations.
- Ensure that the test stations are kept up to date and properly maintained to guarantee optimal operation.
- Develop and implement technical improvements based on the results of simulations and experimental tests.
3) Collaboration and communication:
- Work closely with other team members, researchers, engineers, and technicians.
- Effectively communicate the results of simulations and experiments to project stakeholders.
Candidate Profile
Experience in conducting numerical simulations and/or analytical calculations in thermal engineering and/or cryogenics is preferred. Practical experience in laboratories or test facilities would be an asset.
The position requires proficiency in numerical simulation software (OPENFOAM, COMSOL, ANSYS, etc.) and programming skills (Python, MATLAB, etc.). Knowledge of cryogenics would be a plus, as would skills in test bench design, instrumentation, and metrology.
You have an analytical mind and a scientific approach, as well as the ability to work independently as part of a team with which you will regularly collaborate.

Why join us
Our shared values at the CEA: A Sense of Responsibility, Cooperation, and Curiosity.
Joining the CEA means joining a public research organization whose mission is to provide the government, businesses, and local authorities with the resources they need to tackle the major challenges of our time: the energy transition, climate change, the energy sources of tomorrow, the medicine of the future, digital technologies, and defense.
Joining the CEA means becoming part of a research, development, and innovation environment with a unique culture, heritage, and facilities. In fact, we lead all French research organizations in the number of patents filed!
Joining the CEA also means becoming part of a company committed to promoting a healthy work-life balance (company-wide agreement on quality of life at work, profit-sharing, numerous sports and cultural clubs organized by our employee committee, and CEA bus routes available to employees).
Come join us on the CEA adventure!
“In accordance with the CEA’s commitments to the inclusion of people with disabilities, this position is open to everyone. The CEA offers accommodations and/or organizational arrangements to support the inclusion of employees with disabilities.”
Reporting entity
The CEA is a major player in research, serving citizens, the economy, and the government.
It provides concrete solutions to their needs in four main areas: energy transition, digital transition, technologies for the medicine of the future, and defense and security—all built on a foundation of basic research. Unit Description
The Department of Accelerators, Cryogenics, and Magnetism (DACM) is part of the Institute for Research on the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (Irfu) within the CEA’s Directorate of Fundamental Research. It is located at the Saclay campus. These facilities have been renovated and consolidated into a large complex called “the Synergium,” which covers an area of 25,000 m². The DACM, which is home to 75 research engineers and 45 technicians, is tasked with conducting, in collaboration with the national and international community, to carry out world-class research and development in the fields of particle accelerators, cryogenic systems, and superconducting magnets for fundamental research. For many years, it has played a major role in the construction of the high-tech instruments required for this research.
Within this department, the Cryogenics and Test Stations Laboratory (LCSE) is seeking a cryogenics/thermal/hydraulics engineer.
