The future of superconductivity and nuclear fusion
SupraFusion, jointly led by the CEA and the CNRS, is a scientific and technological exploration program aimed at revolutionizing the field of high-critical-temperature superconductors (HTS) applications, in particular the magnetic confinement fusion.
In the longer term, when HTS technologies will be in widespread use, the expertise acquired during this program will put French laboratories and industries in a strong position to face up to the global competition in this field. Several international initiatives, both public and private, are currently attempting to accelerate the development and deployment of this technology.
A visionary program
High-temperature superconducting magnets
Development of materials capable of operating at higher temperatures (77 K) while generating ultra-powerful magnetic fields (up to 30 teslas).
Nuclear fusion
A decisive step towards more compact and efficient reactors thanks to HTc superconductors.
Rupture application
These advances could transform sectors such as medical imaging, power grids and green mobility.
